Brashear keeps on applying for a position. His will makes it easy for him to keep pushing for what he believes that he can do better than anybody else could. His determination makes it possible for him to be accepted into the American navy. From the time Brashear gets into the training school, he beats all odds to become one of the best divers in the team. This is a good story that allows the audience to understand it from the beginning to the end. The audience can easily understand what happens starting from where Brasher applies for a position in the U.S navy through his first experiences with Sunday and his injury to the time he becomes a qualified and professional diver.
Men of Honor is a movie that has good acting. Brashear and Sunday act in a manner that makes the audience stick to the movie to the end. Brasher is determined and hardworking person who is put under the supervision of a rude and ruthless instructor called Sunday. In his determination to ensure that Brashear does not qualify, Sunday acts in a manner that allows the audience to see dislike without much struggle. For example, Brashear and Sunday have rousing exchanges. When Sunday asks Brashear what his father had told him that kept him up, he says ‘to be the best’. Brashear’s ability to overcome all the hurdles that are put against him show the struggle that people went through because of racism. These two people make the acting in the movie so interesting. The acting was realistic in the sense that Brashear and Sundays’ roles appear to be real, as if they were taken from the real life situations. The story that is acted is exclusively realistic. There is no exaggeration, which makes the story and acting believable.
The movie also has a good use of music. One of the most important aspects that a film can use to bring out emotions in the audience is music. Music also helps to complement the story, so that the audience can understand the story better. Men of Honor has made use of a mixture of new and classic soul music that puts the movie an era when racism was widespread. Music such as A Son Never Forgets by Mark Isham complements the role that Brashear plays, considering the fact that his father died and he had to make him proud. In addition, the song The Breath Holding Contest is also complementary of the story, because whatever happens in the movie there is a struggle that develops like a contest that Brashear must win. The music helps the audience get the right emotion for particular instances, it helps create one’s mood (Men Of Honor). For instance, when Brashear is in the church, background music is played that creates a mood that calms the atmosphere, as Brashear talks of good and bad traditions. There has also been a balance of music with the dialogue that goes on in the movie. The director is ensured that music has to be used even when people are conversing, so that the audience can hear the characters well together with the complementary music on the background. There is no place where music anyhow distorts the audibility of words when characters are engaged in the dialogs. The sound effects that are used in the movie also enhance the right mood. For instance, the audience can tell when Brashear is in the water even when looking aside because the sound effects used match the scene.
The set and lighting in the movie are superb. First, the lighting in the movie has been done perfectly. The audience can clearly see when it is daytime and when it is at night. The director did an excellent job, especially when the story happens indoors. There is no excessive lighting that is too bright for the audience. In addition, there is no place in the movie where lighting has not been provided in the required amount. This is essential for the fair judge, ment of the film as there are some instances where the characters have to be seen inside water. The lighting inside water has been provided sufficiently in the sense that the audience can even identify one character from another while he is under water. For instance, Brashear is seen clearly inside the water when Sunday instructs him about a Russian submarine. The set that has been used is also essential. For instance, the ground plan and the elevations have been used properly to show scenes clearly. For instance, when Sunday is talking with Brashear, the viewer can see different angles of the scene making it appear real. The scenes brought out from rivers such as on the east and west coasts and industrial sites in the Columbia River create a significant set for the various scenes needed in a war drama movie. Excellent scenes that show Sunday and Brashear together were used, as an aspect that brings a real war drama picture to Men of Honor. The color palate that was used added value to the movie because it shows the Brashear’s youthful years back in Kentucky and the changes he experiences as a navy. The grays and blues are cool tones that emphasize his loneliness and isolation while he was in the navy. The special prosthetics were created to emphasize important scenes in the movie. For instance, the effects producer developed seven prosthetics in sequences that depicted an intense scene. This makes the movie appear real.
A movie elicits emotions from the audience. A movie where the audience cannot directly identify the feelings and the situation that the characters find themselves in should not be flat. Men of Honor combined good acting, a realistic storyline, excellent cinematography and quality music to create an excellent emotional movie that can be enjoyed. The characters in the movie, for instance Brashear and Sunday, are good actors because they bring realistic experiences in the development of the story. In fact, their acting makes the audience wonder who should have been the main character because both of them show their prowess.
